This book provides detailed information on not only paying for college but also about the process of applying, determining financial aid and need, and other process-oriented details regarding the college process for both students AND parents. For first generation college students, this book could be incredibly useful and worthwhile. It also addresses many myths or assumptions people make about the college process lie you can't get financial aid if you have savings, for example. This may be a better resource for someone that is still applying for an undergraduate education, but could still be useful in determining how to take steps to get back onto your feet, financially, after coming to college.

Happiness at work : by Rao, Srikumar S.,

Publication: New York : McGraw-Hill, 2010 . xix, 235 p. ; 22 cm. Date: 2010

This book shows us how to bring joy back into our life. In each chapter, the author picks an interesting question or tip to discuss, such as why positive thinking is bad for you, Are you really happy? I suspect not. In these chapters, the author begins her argument by introducing his unique method to bring happiness into work and then raises many examples to verify it. At the end of each chapter, there is an exercise portion that we can practice it by specific scenario. As the author mentions in the book, it is ineffective and not recommended to read this book like a novel and put it aside. However, we need to do the exercise at the end of each chapter and record our observations. I think this book is extremely useful to people feel bored and unhappy at their work and also helpful for students worrying about work stress in the future.

Free marketing : by Cockrum, Jim,

Publication: Hoboken, N.J. : Wiley, 2011 . xxiii, 327 p. ; 24 cm. Date: 2011

The author starts by speaking about how to best market yourself online because nowadays with the explosion of social media that's prevalent everywhere, most things said about you do become permanent. As a solution, this author offers solutions to manage your online reputation for a business or personal status. And the best one is to fix every problem quickly, and never accept something that happens as final. This book would be beneficial for any students look for an entrepreneurial experience after graduation because starting up a business can obviously be stressful, tumultuous and difficult. It'd also be useful for students interested in marketing in general because it speaks greatly to how to mend PR-related damages that occur pretty frequently. The organization and casual tone made it really easy for me to read and understand what the author was trying to convey.

The charisma myth : by Cabane, Olivia Fox.

Publication: New York : Portfolio/Penguin, 2013 . viii, 263 pages ; 22 cm. Date: 2013

In “The Charisma Myth,” author Olivia Fox Cabane utilizes several tools to debunk the “myth” that charisma, the art of presence, power and warmth, is not solely a personal trait that one must be born with. Rather, it is an attribute that any person can slowly master through the patient practice of various exercises. She stresses that to gain charisma is not to change one’s entire persona. Loosely defined, charisma is the ability to make others feel important, and thus gain respect and admiration as a trade-off. Cabane, a consultant who teaches charisma tools, does an excellent job providing firsthand examples of client issues and how, with the proper implementation, her clients mitigated these issues. However, she stresses that in order to gain charisma, one must mentally embrace the changes required of them. For example, she provides various exercises through which to emphasize certain skills (ie, the prefect handshake). In the initial pages, Cabane stresses that to lack practice equates to failure, and thus all tools should be utilized, regardless of comfort level. She also does a fantastic job applying practical advice to everyday situations in which full-fledged charisma can benefit. And indeed, there are many. The concept of charisma is of increasing importance in modern-day management. Indeed, many companies are starting to incorporate “charisma curriculum” into their training programs. Thus, Cabane’s guide is a shining gem amongst other time-worn self-help books. I would highly recommend this book to any student, regardless of discipline, as charisma is a lifelong skill that can facilitate greater levels of personal fulfilment and job success.

The 2-hour job search : by Dalton, Steve,

This book talks about tips using technology to hunt for jobs compared with the outdated strategies. First of all, the author introduces the LAMP (List, Alumni, Motivation, Posting) method process to make a list of target employers. Then, he continues talking about tips for people to contact with alumni and employers to get more information about the job and industry. At the final stage, he discusses the interviewing tips of an informational interviewing: research, discuss, and follow-up. Overall, I think this book is really helpful for people finding a job right now and trying to make this process as efficient as possible. And the most interesting I found in this book is that the author introduces how to use the popular social media like Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter to find jobs, which we can socialize with others and at the same time looking for possible opportunities.

5 necessary skills to keep your career on track / by Pearson, Richard S.

Publication: Denver, Colo. : Outskirts Press, Inc., 2011 . xiv, 210 p. : 22 cm. Date: 2011

With the growing prominence of managerial “self-help” books and movements, “5 Necessary Skills to Keeping Your Career On Track,” by Richard S. Pearson was perhaps a few years before its time. Also known as “5 Necessary Skills To Maintain Employment in Tumultuous Times,” the book emphasizes self-awareness, an understanding of one’s external environment, and several “hard” skills in the creation and maintenance of a successful career. Pearson perhaps sets himself apart by staging his book as a remedy for unemployment in today’s unfavorable job markets, rather than just another career guide. He lays out each skill in its own chapter, and then provides background and support for each. For example, he places emphasis on knowing what’s around you, particularly in your field – will the job you seek be unnecessary in 5 years? Will you be replaced by computers? An underlying theme which stood out to me is Pearson’s attempt to dispel the ideas of ego and narcissism so touted by today’s CEOs, in favor of humor, humility, and interpersonal skills. He goes as far as providing instructions on how to act at parties and networking events. Pearson also provides resources on resume and cover letter critiquing, which I feel like detracts from his earlier musings. He does, however, hit the nail on the head in terms of mentorship—also very prominent right now, I feel as though mentorship truly does open many doors to job-seekers. As a student, this book proves to be an excellent resource for soon-to-be or recent graduates, especially those seeking employment in relatively narrow fields.
