Opportunities in law enforcement and criminal justice careers / by Stinchcomb, James D.

Publication: Chicago : VGM Career Books, 2003 . ix, 178 p. ; 20 cm. Date: 2003

Today, the law enforcement profession abides by principles set by The Peelian Act about 179 years ago. Such principles include how an officer should conduct his or herself in public and to the complete degree that ethical regulations should be upheld. Furthermore, no matter the level of law enforcement, whether local or federal, career opportunities continue to increase due to the growing populations, social demands, and the precedence of governments. The employment rates of law enforcement careers have increased to 3.7 percent in cities of 1,000,000 or more inhabitants. By offering a pessimistic outlook for the rise in crime, hostility, and public and national concern for the safety of the masses that is foreseen, Stinchcomb’s book offers an optimistic outlook for the necessity of law enforcement-related positions to be filled. Stinchcomb provides systematic pathways, showing the requirements and different career routes that are available for a variety of vocations within the realm of law enforcement and criminal justice.

Within this book are easy to read explanations of how to write certain skills. A whole chapter is dedicated to presenting clear and easy to read example resumes for many careers including but not limited to: Aircraft Maintenance, Law Enforcement, Security, Personnel Management, and Information Systems. Another chapter has simple charts showing the translation of military rank to the corresponding civilian title as well as charts correlating the level on military education/training to that of the civilian sector. But not only does this book explain how to write a resume and cover letter specific to the military experience, but it also provides a plethora of resources that those affiliated with the military can take advantage of such as companies that look to hire veterans as well as on base help with the career search.
